Shared Care Committee

A collaborative group of addiction medicine providers, primary care professionals, ASK Wellness Society, Interior Health, and BC Housing is exploring the feasibility of a mid-stream treatment option. This initiative aims to support individuals who may not be ready for or interested in an abstinence-based treatment program but are motivated to improve their health and move along the continuum of care.

ASK Wellness, which provides outreach services to individuals facing substance misuse, homelessness, and mental health challenges, operates a 62-unit supportive housing facility called Spero in Kamloops. The facility, owned by BC Housing, offers unique medical and clinical services within a supportive housing setting. The new mid-stream treatment option will build on this foundation by requiring residents to engage in health services while living at the site. Contingency management will be offered to those adhering to their treatment plans, recognizing their progress.

Recruitment will prioritize individuals with substance misuse issues who are committed to engaging in health and addictions care. The program will feature a collaborative, shared care approach between primary care providers and addiction medicine specialists. Each resident will have a primary prescriber, ensuring individualized care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

The project aims to enhance program retention, strengthen connections with medical therapy, reduce substance use, lower overdose rates, and decrease emergency room visits.
